Before you embark on pre-production, consider the following:
How will you divide up the tasks to come among the group so that everyone makes an ap- proximately equal contribution to the finished product?
How will you make sure you produce enough work, in enough variety, to justify the 25% of your final grade that this piece of work represents? Remember, the previous pieces of course- work you produced individually were worth just 8% each.
Aim to produce one to two minutes of video per team member. For possibly extra marks, you might design a print product to go with it. For example, a movie trailer might be accompanied by a poster. Bear in mind that your production should also be the right length for its medium: for example, movie trailers are normally no more than 150 seconds long.
Mind-map your ideas and choose one that everyone in your group can agree on.
If you want to produce a movie trailer, try to outline a plot for the whole movie (one that you can explain to someone else in 60 seconds or less) before you try to plan the trailer.
Write a script, bearing in mind your limitations: no sets, no lights, no budget!
Complete either a storyboard or a detailed shot-list, so that you know which shots you need. Think carefully about how one shot links into another. Camera angles and fram- ing are vital - think about how you can effectively use them to communicate meaning - in advance! Plan to use a variety of different shots and angles to show the examiner you understand the language of moving image production.
